How to Optimize Chrome Browser and Make It Faster

Launched on September 2, 2008, by Google, Google Chrome has expanded its client base consistently leaving alternative browsers behind. In 2018, Chrome is commanding the market with 58.09% piece of the pie as announced by StatCounter.

I like Chrome as it is quick and there're huge amounts of extensions that will help you get the job done faster.

Over time, Chrome will get slow and sluggish and if you're not technical, getting it back up to speed might seem like a daunting task.

If you feel like Chrome is slowing down on you, this is the right post for you.

In this post, I'll share with you 5 tips to improve your Chrome browser speed and make it fast again.

Update Chrome Browser to the Latest Version

If you have a tendency not to restart your browser, let alone your computer, there's a high chance that you're running an outdated version of Chrome.

Google is releasing updates of Chrome every six weeks and to get this update, you need to restart your browser. As easy as that.

To make sure you have the latest version install, click on the three dots at the top right and go to Help > About Google Chrome.

Remove Unused Extensions

Installing extensions will help you get your job done faster and improve your browsing experience altogether. But too many extensions will eventually slow down your machine as each extension requires an internet connection to do its job.

Click on the three dots at the top right and go to More Tools > Extensions. Go through the list of extensions installed on your Chrome and remove any unused extensions.

Kill Those Open Tabs

If you a habit of opening too many tabs on your machine, you're doing more harm that you could think of. Those tabs on your browser are slowly killing your machine's performance as each tab is actively consuming your machine's RAM or memory.

Limit your open tabs to at most 5 tabs to ensure you're browsing at maximum capacity.

Clear Your Browsing Data

Browsers will cache website data as your browse the internet, this cache will prevent you from downloading the same data twice resulting in faster browsing experience. This applies to Chrome as well.

Over time, your browsing data might get big and it could have negative impact in your browsing speed. A simple fix will be to clear your browsing data when your Chrome gets slow.

To do that click on the three dots at the top right and go to More Tools > Clear Browsing Data. Select "Cached images and files" and clear it.

Check Your Computer Malware

If none of these steps help and your Chrome is still freaking slow, you might have a bigger problem at hand. I would recommend you to try to scan your computer with Malwarebytes to make sure your computer is healthy.

Malware could be dangerous as it could be used to steal your personal information and sensitive data. If your computer is infected, do seek for professional help to clean up your computer.
